There are over 800 different cultures within Papua New Guinea and the Koiari people (pronounced "Kwary") are the original inhabitants of the lands which cover the Kokoda Trail.
We are the grandsons of the men who were instrumental in supporting the Australian soldiers during the war in 1942.
We're immensely proud of our fore-fathers whose stories have been passed down through our family lines - we want to share their stories with you and show you a different perspective of Kokoda.
We want you to come and see the infamous Kokoda Trail with us, the Koiari men of the Kokoda Trail.
When you book a trek with Koiari Trekking, you immediately become a part of our story. You see there is over 90% unemployment in PNG and there is no welfare, so when you book a trek with us, not only do you help us support our families and allow us to pay for schooling and medical aid for our children, you allow us to share with you the true history of this magical part of the world.
With Koiari Trekking you will be thrust into our culture and immersed into the history of the trail. You will meet our families and see the impact your choosing Kokoda as a destination and Koiari Trekking as your provider has on every village along the trail.
We buy all of our fruits and vegetables from the villagers and support them with guest house payments. We make sure your participation on our treks supports everyone.
We believe this is why you should choose us, we're here to work with and support everyone on Kokoda.

The only part of your journey we will not plan for you is your flights. The reason is we want you to be able to book the best flights and the best cost to suit you and your personal circumstances. We will tell you when we need you to arrive in Port Moresby, but when you fly internally in Australia or to PNG is up to you and allows you to choose the flights which fit within your budget. We have an agent in Cairns who is able to obtain amazing deals to PNG an we're happy to pass their details to you when you book with us.
You will be required to obtain a PNGTourist Visa. Hit the link to obtain your visa. Be aware! When you hit the link it will come up on the business visa application. You need to tab across to the visitor application which costs you $50USD. You will be asked for certain documents. You can use the letter we send you as your proof of trekking.
We have a magnificent relationship with the Holiday Inn, Port Moresby. In this one facility there is three hotels, three restaurants, two bars, a pool, gym and a tennis court. You can see a dentist and have a facial too. We have a washing room for your clothes. Once you're inside, you may not want to leave!
This is up to you. We recommend that you use this service for more than the assistance that he provides you. You are supporting the local community, the economy and giving a job to someone who would otherwise not have a job. You will meet the families of your porter and spend time getting thrust even deeper into the culture.
No! we provide you with one of our company tents and a ground sheet to use. This saves you trying to clean your own tent for quarantine upon your return. PLEASE NOTE: At Koiari Trekking you will not be asked to share a tent, each person has their own two-person sized tent.
If you are using a personal porter your big pack should weigh no more than 14kg. When we add an additional 2kg for your tent and another 4kg for your porter to carry his food and equipment, this will have us at 22.5kg which is the maximum allowable limit by the governing body of the Kokoda Trail, The Kokoda Track Authority. If you are carrying your own pack, then you can carry whatever load you desire.
If you are using a personal porter your you will have much of your equipment with your porter. This will mean you will only be required to carry water, electrolytes, snacks, your first aid supplies and a jacket, because believe us, it can get cold! We would expect your pack to weigh no more than 10kg when you have a full load of water and supplies.
We recommend you're able to carry at least four to five litres of water at any time. This will be in the different water vessels you decide to carry, be this in water bottles, a camelbak and or other means.
Water will all be locally sourced from the myriad of river, streams, waterfalls, and taps. There is an absolute abundance on water and pending one four hour stretch, you could reasonably expect to be exposed to potable water every few hours.
While the water is very clean, we cannot guarantee there may not be a germ or other contaminating it. In the interest of maintaining your health and happiness for your adventure we recommend you use a water sterilisation method to maintain your health and hygiene. You may choose between a "Steri-Pen" tablets or drops to maintain the sterility of your water.
This is up to you. We recommend you take at least K300 ($150AUD approximately) onto the track in small denominations What you spend at the hotel is up to you, personally we put this on our credit card and pay our account upon check out.
We provide you a location to wash each day. Each campsite has either a river or shower for you to wash prior to dinner and bed.
Whilst you don't need to be an athlete you will need a level of fitness and prepare for your journey. We're able to and willing to help you prepare for your adventure.
While there are some, they're nowhere near as prevalent as you would think. We show you how to prevent these and are there to help you in the unlikely event you have one.
Much like the ticks and leeches, there are mosquitoes, but nor in the swarms you possibly think they are. Your tent has a mozzie net, we use repellant and wear long clothes at night to prevent stings. To detail how many you can expect, we have it on good authority there are fewer mosquitoes on Kokoda than there are in Australia!
There has been a lot of improvement with the toilet situation in the last few years. Most of the villages along the trail have a long drop which has a toilet tub you are able to sit on, much like your toilet at home. That is, if it was green, and didn't flush... You are in the jungle so we ask you to remain a little open minded.
We have a cook who prepares all meals for you. You will eat carbohydrate heavy food to give you the nutrition you require to be fuelled for trekking. You will have cereals and some hot items such as pancakes or porridge for breakfast, morning tea is biscuits, nuts and chips, lunch is a mixture of fresh fruits (where available from the track), in addition to rice paper rolls, sushi, buns and or donuts. Afternoon tea is a mixture of salty treats and for dinner is a mixture, but there is a pizza/ pasta night, the team make cakes. So you can see there is a vast variety of fresh and prepared foods for you to eat. We can cater for celiacs, vegans, vegetarians and any other allergy or intolerance you may have.
We carry so much food that our General Porters are only able to carry half of it. We transport the remaining food to a village in the middle of the track. You can trust us when we tell you that you will be well fed. There is so much food, we have had some people complaining to us they've put weight on! We provide you a lot of food, how much of this you choose to eat is up to you!
In short no, but there needs to be a realistic appreciation of what you are undertaking. You will be the best person to decide on maturity of a child or to the physicality of someone older. It's always best to call and discuss. Note: The youngest we've taken is a 12-year old girl and the oldest is a 78-year old man.
This varies from trek to trek. Typically we have a minimum of six and a maximum of 16, We like to work on a magic number of 12 people as we have found this is the most enjoyable for all. We need you to know that in the event your chosen trek has fewer than six people booked six-months prior to your chosen trek, we will cancel your trek as it will not afford you the experience you deserve. We will be in touch with you at this point to make alternate travel arrangements for you.
We provide you with an equipment list that has both essential and luxury items. We do boot reviews on our YouTube Channel to assist you buying your footwear for trekking.
